Summer has always been hot in Portugal. But in recent years, extreme temperatures have started to directly affect how sports events are planned.

More organizers are being forced to make difficult decisions: change start times, adjust routes, reinforce hydration points or, in some cases, postpone or cancel events to protect participants.

For athletes, this means one thing: planning the race season in advance is becoming more important than ever.

Races are adapting

High temperatures are no longer just a challenge for athletes. They are now part of event planning.

Common adaptations include:

  • Earlier start times
  • More evening and night races
  • Extra hydration points
  • Stronger medical support
  • Route or distance adjustments
  • Postponements or cancellations in extreme conditions

The goal is simple: to keep athletes safe while allowing events to go ahead whenever possible.

Late summer and autumn bring the season back

While July and August still offer great races, many athletes are already looking ahead to September and October.

With milder temperatures, Portugal’s race calendar becomes busier again, especially for road running and trail events.

Why planning ahead matters

When weather conditions are less predictable, following the calendar closely becomes essential.

Planning early helps athletes:

  • Secure a place before registrations sell out
  • Stay informed about date or schedule changes
  • Organize travel and accommodation
  • Build a more balanced race season

Many athletes are no longer choosing just one race. They are building a full calendar of goals for the months ahead.

A new reality for organizers

Climate conditions are also changing the way events are organized.

Today, organizers need to think not only about the route, but also about sun exposure, hydration, medical support and contingency plans.

This ability to adapt is becoming a key part of creating a safe and positive race experience.

The best of the season is still ahead

Despite the challenges of summer, Portugal’s race calendar remains full of exciting opportunities.

As September and October approach, milder temperatures bring back some of the country’s most attractive events.
