    POVOAÇÃO TRAIL 2027

    The 7th edition of Povoação Trail is a trail-running event taking place on March 14, 2027, on the island of São Miguel, Portugal. It features five linear, non-stop races: Povoação Ultra (50 km), Povoação Trail (30 km), Povoação Sprint (18 km), Mini Trail (9 km), and a 9 km Caminhada (walk).

    Minimum age is 16 for Mini Trail and 18 for other races. The event is organized by HL Runners Club in partnership with the Municipality of Povoação and includes challenging elevation profiles, with the Ultra race having 3600 m positive elevation gain. The trails traverse forest paths, unpaved roads, and some asphalt, crossing public roads and private properties.

    The event offers a competitive atmosphere with prize money for top finishers in Ultra, Trail, and Sprint races, and trophies for Mini Trail. The Caminhada is non-competitive. Safety and fair play are emphasized, with mandatory equipment and electronic timing.

    Backyard Ultra Ansião

    The 3rd Backyard Ultra Ansião is an extreme endurance running event scheduled for March 20, 2027, at Parque Empresarial do Camporês in Ansião. This official Backyard Ultra race features a unique format where participants run a 6.706 km loop every hour, starting exactly on the hour, continuing until only one runner remains.

    The race is open to athletes aged 18 and over. It is part of the official Backyard Ultra calendar and is classified as a Bronze Ticket event. The course includes a night-marked loop with a positive elevation gain of 80 meters, demanding both physical and mental stamina.

    The event offers a challenging and intense atmosphere where rest time depends on how quickly each loop is completed. The last athlete able to finish a loop within the hour wins, making it a true test of endurance and strategy.

    The Trail Run Real Priolo returns to São Miguel on 24 April 2027 for its seventh edition, offering runners the opportunity to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Nordeste through one of the Azores’ flagship trail running events. Recognised by the Portuguese Trail Running Association (ATRP), ITRA and the UTMB World Series, the event combines challenging mountain trails with the natural beauty of one of the island’s most iconic regions.

    The programme includes four competitive races — a demanding 49 km Ultra, 30 km Trail, 18 km Trail Sprint and 12 km Mini Trail — alongside a 9.3 km recreational walk. The routes traverse forest trails, agricultural paths, streams and protected natural areas, showcasing the rich biodiversity and dramatic scenery that make Nordeste one of São Miguel’s premier trail running destinations.

    Designed for both experienced trail runners and newcomers to the sport, the event offers different levels of technical difficulty while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and the preservation of the Priolo’s natural habitat.
