Solo, Doubles or Relay? How to Choose Your Next Hybrid Race in Portugal

Hybrid racing is growing quickly in Portugal, but not every event asks the same thing from you.

Some races are built entirely around teamwork. Others let you take on every running segment and workout station alone. And some offer relay formats where the challenge is shared across a bigger team.

So when choosing your next hybrid race, the first question might not be how fit am I?

It might be: how do I want to race?

Here are some upcoming events in Portugal to help you decide.

If you want teamwork from start to finish: DUAL 3

đź“… October 11, 2026
📍 University of Aveiro Athletics Track

DUAL 3 is built specifically around pairs.

The competition consists of eight rounds combining running and functional stations. Both athletes run together throughout the race and enter each workout station at the same time. At the stations, however, only one athlete works at a time, meaning strategy becomes an important part of the race.

There are Regular and Advanced levels, with men’s, women’s and mixed doubles categories. In the Regular division, each round begins with a 400 m run, while Advanced athletes face 800 m running sections.

This makes DUAL particularly interesting for athletes who enjoy planning the race together: deciding who should take more repetitions at a certain station, where to recover and how to keep a consistent pace as a pair.

And there is currently an extra reason to get your teammate on board:

🎟️ Use code DUAL15 when booking through RaceFinder and get 15% off your registration.

The current €55 entry becomes €46.75 with the discount.

If you want another doubles challenge sooner: HYGOES 2026

đź“… September 12, 2026
📍 Góis, Coimbra

HYGOES is another event where you will need a teammate.

The race combines eight 1 km running segments with eight functional stations and is exclusively contested in Open Doubles, with men’s, women’s and mixed categories. The pair completes the running sections together and can divide the work at the functional stations.

It is a simple format to understand, but that does not make it easy. Eight kilometres of running feels very different when every kilometre is interrupted by another physical task.

Registrations are currently listed at €70 per pair, with an extra RaceFinder discount available:

🎟️ Use code HYGOES5 for 5% off.

That brings the current registration price down to €66.50.

The current registration deadline is August 31, so this is one to decide on soon.

If you want more ways to compete: Fátima Games

đź“… September 12, 2026
📍 Fátima

Not everyone wants to choose between racing alone and finding exactly one partner.

Fátima Games broadens the possibilities with men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, male and female relays, plus Kids and Teens categories.

The main hybrid format combines 800 m running sections with eight functional stations, including Ski, Air Bike, Burpee Broad Jumps, Row, Farmer Carry, Dumbbell Walking Lunges and Wall Balls. (Racefinder)

For athletes coming from functional fitness or a gym community, the relay option can also make the jump into hybrid racing feel more accessible.

If you want the full challenge alone: Vortex September

đź“… September 19, 2026
📍 Faro

Want nobody else to blame for your pacing strategy?

Vortex gives athletes the option to race solo, while also offering doubles and relay categories.

The event takes place on the athletics track in Faro and follows an eight-round hybrid format, combining running with functional exercises. Solo, doubles, mixed doubles and relay options are available, making it one of the more flexible events on the calendar when it comes to how you want to compete. (Racefinder)

It is a useful option if you have already tried a doubles race and now want to see what happens when every metre and every repetition belongs to you.

If you want Open or Pro: PRIME HYBRID ESPINHO

đź“… September 26, 2026
📍 Espinho

PRIME HYBRID ESPINHO gives athletes another choice: not just who to race with, but also which level to race at.

The outdoor event combines eight 1 km running segments with eight functional stations, including SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Row, Farmer’s Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls.

Athletes can compete individually or in doubles, with Open and Pro divisions available across several categories.

For someone moving from regular gym training into competition, Open can provide an entry point. For more experienced athletes looking for a harder benchmark, Pro offers the next step.

And if October suits your calendar better: Crossers

đź“… October 18, 2026
📍 Loures

One week after DUAL 3, Crossers – The Hybrid Race brings another doubles-only competition to the calendar.

The event combines 8 km of running with eight functional stations and offers men’s, women’s and mixed doubles categories.

That makes October particularly interesting if your preferred way to race is with a partner: DUAL and Crossers offer two different opportunities within the same month.

So, solo, doubles or relay?

There is no single “right” way to start hybrid racing.

Choose solo if you want complete control over your result and are ready to handle every part of the race yourself.

Choose doubles if you like sharing the workload, building a strategy and having someone beside you when the race starts to hurt.

Choose a relay if you want to experience the atmosphere and intensity of hybrid racing while sharing the challenge with a larger team.

The important part is finding the format that makes you want to train for it.

And with more hybrid events appearing across Portugal, there are increasingly more ways to do exactly that.

Remember: RaceFinder users can currently get 15% off DUAL 3 with code DUAL15 and 5% off HYGOES 2026 with code HYGOES5.

From Circuit Racing to Marathons: Which Type of MTB Race Is Right for You?

In mountain biking, choosing your next race is not just about deciding how many kilometres you want to ride. Some events have you spending two or three hours repeating a short circuit. Others take you across dozens of kilometres of trails, dirt roads and rural paths. In some races, the main challenge is managing your […]

Running + Strength: The Hybrid Events Changing Portugal’s Race Calendar

For a long time, choosing an event was relatively simple. If you liked running, you picked a 5K, 10K, half marathon or trail race. If you preferred functional training, you stayed in the gym, CrossTraining box or entered specific fitness competitions. Now, those two worlds are increasingly meeting on the same start line. Hybrid races […]

Not Every Race Has to Be All-Out: How to Use Races in Your Training Without Turning Every Bib Into a PB Attempt

Signing up for a race often comes with an almost automatic assumption: if you are wearing a bib, you should be running as fast as you possibly can. PB. Faster pace. Better position. Full effort. But it does not always have to work that way. A race can absolutely be the main goal you have […]
