5 Fast Half Marathons to Run in Portugal Before the End of 2026

Some races make climbing part of the experience. Others allow you to settle into a rhythm and hold it for kilometre after kilometre.

For runners who prefer road races without major elevation changes, we have selected five events that are still to come in Portugal in 2026. This is not a ranking of the country’s fastest courses. Wind, temperature, sharp turns and crowded starts can all affect race day.

Hyundai Porto Half Marathon

13 September 2026 · Porto · 21.1 km

The first race takes runners along the Douro. The Porto Half Marathon starts and finishes on Avenida de Dom Carlos I, passing several recognisable areas on both sides of the river.

The organisers describe it as a mostly flat course that allows runners to chase fast times. It is not completely straightforward, however: there are changes of direction and crossings of the Luís I Bridge. The scenery is one of its strengths, with sections through Ribeira, Gaia and along the waterfront.

It is a strong option for anyone looking for an urban half marathon with a lively atmosphere and plenty of room to settle into a steady pace.

Ameal Half Marathon

27 September 2026 · Coimbra · 21.097 km

This is where the numbers are particularly useful. The Ameal Half Marathon lists only 66 metres of total elevation gain over its certified 21.097 km course. Runners are also divided into starting waves to improve the flow during the opening kilometres.

Of the five races on this list, Ameal has perhaps the clearest numerical evidence behind its mostly flat profile.

It could suit runners who prefer to control their effort from the beginning, as well as anyone choosing a half marathon with the intention of running evenly rather than constantly adjusting to hills.

Ovar City Half Marathon

4 October 2026 · Ovar · 21.0975 km

Ovar is a long-standing fixture on the Portuguese road-running calendar. Its route combines urban streets, woodland, the lagoon and the coastline, while the support around town has become part of the race’s identity.

The organisers provide a course profile and elevation chart for 2026. Ovar also has strong historical records: 1:01:47 for men and 1:09:13 for women. Previous editions have been described as flat or almost entirely flat, although coastal wind and a slight rise towards the finish can still influence the race.

It may not be a day to ignore the conditions, but it remains an appealing autumn test for runners interested in checking their form.

Hyundai Lisbon Half Marathon

11 October 2026 · Lisbon · 21.0975 km

Starting on the Vasco da Gama Bridge gives this race an unmistakable sense of occasion. From there, runners head through Lisbon before finishing in Praça do Comércio.

The organisers describe the course as fast and fluid. It is not completely flat, as the bridge creates some early elevation change, but much of the remaining race follows open urban sections where runners can establish a consistent rhythm.

This is particularly attractive to runners who want a large event, an international field and a landmark finish in central Lisbon.

Nazaré International Half Marathon

15 November 2026 · Nazaré · 21.0975 km

Often referred to as the mother of Portuguese half marathons, the Nazaré race is expected to celebrate its 50th edition in 2026. It is scheduled for 15 November and closes the year’s Estrelas de Portugal 21K circuit.

The previous edition’s course was described as almost entirely flat and measured according to Portuguese Athletics Federation criteria. It follows sections of the seafront and the road towards Famalicão before returning to Nazaré. Should the same route be maintained in 2026, it will remain an appealing option for finishing the season without facing major climbs.

The Atlantic wind may prove more challenging than the elevation profile.

Flat does not always mean easy

A low-elevation course can make it easier to maintain an even effort, but it does not guarantee a personal best. Weather, wind, turns, aid stations and pacing during the opening kilometres still matter.

Always check the final 2026 course and regulations before registering. After that, it is a matter of choosing the race, preparing the pace and arriving ready for the start line.
