May is one of the strongest months of the trail running season in Portugal. With longer days, stable weather conditions and diverse landscapes across the country and islands, it’s the perfect time to explore new routes and prepare for bigger summer challenges.

Here are some trail races taking place across Portugal this May:

IV Trail Rota Megalítica — Évora (May 1)

Set in the Alentejo region near Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, this race offers a unique trail experience through megalithic landscapes and historic terrain. It’s a great option for runners looking for scenic routes combined with cultural heritage.

ZUT – Zebra Ultra Trail — Cantanhede (May 3)

The Zebra Ultra Trail includes multiple distance options, including longer technical routes and shorter accessible distances, making it suitable for both experienced trail runners and newcomers. The event was rescheduled to early May due to trail safety conditions earlier in the year.

Trail Bem Viver — Marco de Canaveses (May 10)

Located in northern Portugal, this event offers runners the opportunity to explore forest trails and rural landscapes typical of the region. A solid mid-season race for building endurance and maintaining competition rhythm.

Trail das Maias — Cadaval (May 17)

A trail event known for combining technical sections with accessible distances, making it suitable both for competitive runners and athletes looking to gain experience on varied terrain.

IV Trail Praia Mag8 — Sintra (May 24)

A coastal trail experience near Sintra, combining ocean views with technical sections and varied elevation. Ideal for runners who enjoy scenic routes close to Lisbon.

IX Lisboa Green Trail — Lisbon (May 24)

One of the most accessible trail events in the Lisbon area, perfect for runners wanting to try trail running without travelling far from the city.

Furnas Night Trail — Povoação (May 30)

Held in the Azores, this night trail race offers a unique running experience through volcanic landscapes and natural surroundings. Night races provide a completely different atmosphere and challenge compared to traditional daytime events.

May offers trail runners the chance to explore Portugal from north to south — and even across the islands — with events suitable for every level.
