Cycling in the Rain: Safety Tips for Autumn & Winter

Riding in the rain isn’t every cyclist’s favourite plan… but sometimes it’s the only way to keep the routine alive during autumn and winter.
Wet roads, cold air and lower visibility bring challenges — but with the right preparation, a rainy ride can be safe, productive and even enjoyable.

Here’s how to stay confident on the bike when the weather turns grey.

1) Adjust your speed and increase braking distance

Wet roads reduce grip, especially on corners and painted road markings.
Slow down earlier than usual and give yourself extra space to react.

✔ Light, gradual braking
✔ Avoid sudden movements
✔ Reduce speed before the corner — not during

2) Lower your tyre pressure slightly

A few PSI less increases traction and stability on slippery surfaces.

✔ Check tyre pressure before every ride
✔ Drop 5–10 PSI from your dry-weather setup
✔ Make sure tyres aren’t worn — slick tyres + rain = risky

3) Wear layers and protect your extremities

Cold rain pulls heat out of the body fast.

✔ Base layer + waterproof jacket
✔ Neoprene gloves
✔ Toe covers or overshoes
✔ A buff to protect neck and ears

Staying warm = staying in control.

4) Make yourself visible

Rain + clouds = lower visibility for drivers and cyclists.

✔ Front and rear lights (always on)
✔ Reflective elements
✔ Bright colours if possible
✔ Keep a safe position on the road (never too close to the curb)

5) Keep your chain clean and lubricated

Rain washes away chain lube quickly.

✔ Wipe & lube the chain after every wet ride
✔ Check brakes for grit
✔ Avoid cross-chaining to reduce wear

Your bike will thank you.

6) Fuel more than usual

Cold weather increases energy expenditure, and rain can mask thirst and hunger.

✔ Drink electrolytes
✔ Bring an extra gel or bar
✔ Eat early in the ride

💛 Wet rides build strong cyclists

Riding in the rain demands technique, patience and confidence — but it also builds resilience and consistency.
