Portugal Running Calendar 2027: How to Choose the Right Races

Almost every runner goes through the same phase: you open a race calendar, find an exciting event in January, another one in February, two more in March, and before you know it, nearly every weekend is booked.

It’s easy to get carried away. Portugal offers an incredible variety of running events, from road races and scenic trails to hybrid fitness competitions and endurance challenges.

But before hitting that registration button, there’s one question worth asking: Are these races actually bringing you closer to your goals, or are you just collecting race bibs?

Building a running calendar isn’t about entering as many events as possible. It’s about choosing races that match your experience, training schedule, and what you want to achieve throughout the year.

And 2027 already has plenty of exciting options to consider.

1. Start With Your Main Running Goal

Before registering for anything, ask yourself a simple question: What would you like to achieve in 2027?

Maybe you want to run your first 10K without stopping. Perhaps you’re chasing a half marathon personal best, preparing for your first trail race, or looking for a challenge that combines running and strength.

Whatever your goal, it helps to divide your race calendar into two categories.

Goal races: These are the events where you want to perform at your best. They should guide your training for several weeks or months.

Preparation races: Events that help you build experience, test your race pace, or simply enjoy the atmosphere without the pressure of achieving a specific result.

For example, if your main target is a half marathon in April, running a 10K in January or February could be a useful way to assess your progress.

The idea isn’t necessarily to race less. It’s to make sure every event has a purpose.

2. January: Start the Year With a Realistic Challenge

January is a great time to get back into racing, especially after the holiday season, when training routines may have been a little different.

But starting the year strong doesn’t mean you need to sign up for a marathon.

VIII Grande Prémio Peniche a Correr — January 10, 2027

The VIII Grande Prémio Peniche a Correr is an option for runners looking to start the year with a road race.

The event features:

  • 10K race
  • 5K walk
  • 500m kids’ race

The 10K route takes runners through the streets of Peniche, combining an urban race atmosphere with the town’s coastal surroundings.

For experienced runners, it can serve as an early-season fitness test. For newer runners who have already built a suitable training base, it could be a motivating first goal of the year.

HERO Challenge — January 23, 2027

What if you want to start the year with something completely different?

The HERO Challenge, held in Gondomar, combines running with functional fitness exercises in a hybrid competition.

Participants compete in men’s, women’s, or mixed pairs, completing seven 800-meter running segments alongside eight workout stations.

It’s an exciting option for athletes who already combine running and strength training and want to test both abilities in a competitive setting.

However, don’t underestimate the challenge. Although the race includes 5.6 km of running in total, the workout stations make it a very different experience from a traditional running race.

3. February: Leave the Road Behind and Try Trail Running

If most of your training happens on roads, adding a trail race to your calendar can introduce a completely different challenge.

However, distance alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

A 15K trail race with steep, technical climbs may require more time and effort than a 21K road race. That’s why elevation gain, terrain, and your previous experience should all influence your decision.

V Trail Vilarinho Cima — February 7, 2027

Held in Gandra, Paredes, the V Trail Vilarinho Cima offers three distances:

  • Long Trail — approximately 21 km
  • Short Trail — 13 km
  • Walk — 8 km

With different distances available, the event caters to both runners looking for a longer challenge and those taking their first steps into trail running.

For athletes used to road racing, the 13K option could provide a new experience without immediately committing to a long-distance event.

XII Trail Montes Saloios — February 21, 2027

If you’re looking for a trail race near Lisbon, Trail Montes Saloios, held in Covas de Ferro, Sintra, is worth considering.

The event offers several distances:

  • Ultra Trail — 50 km
  • Long Trail — 31 km
  • Short Trail — 15 km
  • Trail Experience — 10 km
  • Walk — 10 km

This variety allows runners to choose a challenge that matches their current fitness and experience.

It’s also a reminder that you don’t need to be ready for an ultramarathon to participate in a major trail running event.

4. March: Choose Between Progress and Endurance

After a few weeks of racing and training, March could be the right time to test a new goal.

But not every event requires the same kind of preparation.

Trilhos dos Calceteiros — March 14, 2027

The Trilhos dos Calceteiros, held in Fanhões, Loures, offers distances of 31 km, 17 km, and 10 km, alongside a walking event.

It’s an option for runners who want to continue exploring trail running without traveling far from Lisbon.

The 17K course, for example, includes approximately 700 meters of positive elevation gain. That’s a detail worth paying attention to, especially if you’re used to flatter courses.

Backyard Ultra Ansião — March 20, 2027

For experienced endurance runners looking for something different, Backyard Ultra Ansião offers a unique format.

Participants must complete a 6.706 km loop every hour.

Finish the loop within the hour, and you can line up for the next one. Fail to finish on time or miss the next start, and you’re eliminated.

The process continues until only one runner remains capable of completing another loop.

It sounds simple, but the real challenge comes from accumulated fatigue, managing recovery between loops, nutrition, and staying mentally focused for hours.

This isn’t an event to attempt without appropriate preparation. However, for runners with endurance experience, it can offer a completely different way to test their limits.

5. April: Turn Months of Training Into a Major Goal

One useful strategy is to choose a major spring race and use the preceding months to gradually build toward it.

That way, your earlier events become part of a bigger training plan rather than isolated competitions.

Lisbon Eco Marathon — April 11, 2027

The Lisbon Eco Marathon 2027 offers a different running experience in Portugal’s capital.

The event takes place through Monsanto Forest Park and includes several distances:

  • Marathon — 42 km
  • Half Marathon — 21 km
  • Mini Marathon — 13 km
  • Walk — 8 km

With trails and elevation changes along the courses, preparation should involve more than running on flat pavement.

For runners aiming for a major event in April, the different distances provide the flexibility to choose a challenge that matches their training progress.

6. How Many Races Should You Run in 2027?

There’s no perfect number of races that works for every runner.

An experienced athlete might comfortably participate in shorter events throughout the year, while someone preparing for their first marathon may need longer recovery periods between demanding competitions.

What’s more important than the number of races is understanding their intensity and the recovery they require.

Here’s an example of how you could structure the first few months of 2027:

MonthMain PurposeExample Race
JanuaryTest your fitnessGrande Prémio Peniche a Correr — 10K
FebruaryExperience different terrainTrail Vilarinho Cima — 13K
MarchFocus on specific preparation and recoveryTraining toward your main goal
AprilMain goal raceLisbon Eco Marathon — 21K

This is simply an example, not a universal training plan. Your schedule should reflect your experience, fitness, and recovery needs.

And remember: you don’t need to race every month.

Sometimes, spending a few weeks without competing is exactly what helps you perform better at your next event.

7. Three Mistakes to Avoid When Planning Your 2027 Running Calendar

Signing Up Just Because Your Friends Are Racing

Running with friends can be one of the best parts of the sport.

But sharing the experience doesn’t mean you need to share exactly the same goals.

If you’re preparing for a marathon, saying yes to every demanding race invitation could interfere with your training.

You can still support your friends, join shorter events, or treat certain races as relaxed social runs.

Comparing Distances Without Considering the Terrain

A 20K trail race and a 20K road race aren’t necessarily equivalent challenges.

Elevation gain, technical terrain, weather conditions, and course difficulty can dramatically affect how long the event takes and how demanding it feels.

Always look beyond the distance before registering.

Forgetting to Leave Time for Recovery

Racing can be part of your training process, but repeatedly competing at maximum effort requires additional recovery.

If every weekend becomes an attempt at a personal best, you may struggle to maintain consistent training.

Choose your priority races carefully and give yourself enough time to recover between them.

8. How to Build a Race Calendar You’ll Actually Enjoy

A good race calendar should balance ambition with enjoyment.

You might choose one event where you’re chasing a personal best, another to discover a new part of Portugal, and a third simply to share the experience with friends.

You can also mix different types of events throughout the year.

For example, a runner whose main focus is road racing might try a short trail in the winter, target a half marathon in the spring, enjoy a few shorter races during the summer, and prepare for another personal best in the autumn.

There’s no need to follow the same formula every year.

The important thing is to recognize which events matter most to you and avoid making every race feel like an obligation.
