Don’t Have a Race on Your Calendar Yet? That Might Be Why You’re Feeling Less Motivated

Have you ever noticed how everything changes when you have a race coming up?

Suddenly, that workout you’ve been postponing doesn’t feel optional anymore. Getting out of bed for an early run becomes a little easier. Even on the days when motivation is nowhere to be found, it’s easier to lace up your shoes because there’s a clear goal waiting for you.

Most of us like to say we run simply because we enjoy running. And that’s true. But there’s also something special about having a date circled on the calendar. Something that makes you imagine the start line, the course, the finish line, and maybe even the post-race coffee or beer you’ll enjoy afterwards.

Perhaps that’s why so many athletes are already choosing their autumn races and planning the rest of their season. Not because they love organizing spreadsheets and training plans, but because signing up for an event does much more than secure a race bib. It gives you a reason to keep training when motivation starts to fade.

And it doesn’t have to be a marathon or an ultra trail. It can be a 5K, a local trail race, a cycling event, or that triathlon you’ve been thinking about for months. The important thing is having something to look forward to.

If you’re looking for inspiration, there are plenty of great events coming up over the next few months. Maybe it’s the unique atmosphere of the XLIV Grande Prémio de São João, the energy of Corrida Rosa, the stunning trails of Oeiras Trail Run, or the challenge of Trail Costa Vicentina. The most important thing isn’t which race you choose. It’s simply choosing one.

One of the most common mistakes athletes make is waiting for the perfect race. The perfect course. The perfect date. The perfect distance. Meanwhile, the weeks go by and nothing gets booked. In reality, the best race isn’t always the biggest or the most famous one. It’s the race that gets you excited to train tomorrow.

So if you’ve been running without a goal lately, maybe now is the perfect time to take a look at the calendar and choose your next challenge. After all, the best part of a race doesn’t always happen on race day. Sometimes it starts the moment you click “Register.”

Running Clubs in Lisbon: The Best Way to Meet People and Stay Motivated

A few years ago, running was often seen as a solitary sport. Today, Lisbon is proving the exact opposite. Across the city, running clubs have become part of everyday life. Some meet before work, others after sunset. Some focus on performance, while others are all about community. What they all have in common is that […]

Open Water Swimming: Portugal’s Summer Sport

I Ran Oeiras Trail Run and Now I Understand Why So Many Athletes Keep Coming Back

When someone mentions trail running near Lisbon, I’ll admit I’m usually a little skeptical. In my head, “real” trail running means mountains, plenty of elevation gain, and at least a couple of hours in the car before reaching the start line. So when I signed up for Oeiras Trail Run in 2025, I wasn’t entirely […]
