8 Reasons to Race in Portugal This Summer

Summer in Portugal is not the season most runners plan around. The heat gets the blame. But look more carefully at the June and July calendar and a different picture emerges — one of coastline half marathons, mountain ultras, sunset trails on the Spanish border, and night races where the temperature finally drops and the atmosphere goes up.

Portugal’s summer race calendar is more varied, more interesting and more accessible than most runners realise. Here are eight events across June and July that prove it.

1. The Race With the Most Impressive Credentials — DMUT | 7 June | Cinfães, Douro Valley

The Douro Montemuro Ultra Trilhos is not a local event that got lucky. It is certified by the Associação de Trail Running de Portugal, with its competitive events integrated into the respective national circuits: Ultra Trail, Trail, Sprint and Youth. It is also certified by the ITRA — International Trail Running Association — and carries a UTMB Index.

In plain terms: this is a race that counts towards global trail running rankings, attracting serious athletes from across Europe while remaining open to runners of all levels through its shorter distances (12 km, 21 km, 33 km and 51 km).

The setting is the Douro Valley — wine terraces, river views and technical mountain terrain that make this one of the most visually remarkable race environments in Portugal.

2. The Race With the Best Name — and the Scenery to Back It Up | 14 June | Figueira da Foz

A Corrida Mais Bonita de Portugal 2026 takes place on 14 June in Figueira da Foz, with a 10 km race and walk on a unique course along the sea. The name — The Most Beautiful Race in Portugal — is a bold claim. The course backs it up: starting at Praia de Quiaios and finishing at the iconic Torre do Relógio in the heart of Figueira da Foz, the race runs with the Atlantic Ocean as a constant backdrop, combining coastal zones, wide avenues and landmarks of the city.

It’s a 10 km race — short enough for first-timers, fast enough for veterans chasing a time — and one of the few summer events where the scenery is genuinely part of the experience rather than a backdrop.

3. The Race That’s Unlike Any Other Half Marathon in Portugal | 14 June | Costa da Caparica, Lisbon

Running a half marathon on sand is a completely different physical challenge from road running — harder on the legs, slower on paper, but richer in every other sense. The XVII Meia Maratona na Areia Analice Silva on the beach at Costa da Caparica is one of the only events of its kind in the country, with 10 km and 21 km distances run along one of Europe’s longest Atlantic beaches, with the ocean to the left for the entire race.

If you’ve been running road races for years and feel like the format has gotten routine, this is the reset you didn’t know you needed.

4. The Race Where the Sunset Is Part of the Course | 13 June | Ouguela, Campo Maior

The Sunset Ouguela Sentinela da Raya is a race that begins at sunset on the Spanish border in Campo Maior — a unique visual and cultural experience, watching the light fade over the Alentejo plains before the darkness takes over.

The 2nd edition of this race has built a reputation for atmosphere that’s hard to replicate: running along Portugal’s eastern frontier as the sun drops below Spain, with a castle silhouette and open plains on both sides. It’s the kind of event that stops being about the time on the clock almost immediately.

5. The Half Marathon With a River Setting | 10 June | Santarém

The Meia Maratona Avieiros takes its name from the Avieiros — the river fishing communities of the Tagus — and runs through one of the most culturally rich stretches of the Portuguese interior. A half marathon (21 km) and 10 km option, in a region that most runners drive through without stopping.

For those who want a June half marathon without the crowds of the bigger urban events, this is an established race with competitive fields and strong local character.

6. The Night Trail With the Best Setting | 27 June | Sesimbra

The Serra, the sea, the fish and the glow of Sesimbra’s night create a picturesque setting that participants can admire at various points along the route: the Fortress, the Marginal, Ribeira do Cavalo, the Castle of Sesimbra.

The IV Sesimbra Night Trail takes place on 27 June 2026, in the village of Sesimbra, offering a unique trail running experience in a nocturnal setting, with trails running through areas of great natural beauty, including zones of the Serra da Arrábida. Available in 20 km, 10 km and walk options — with a start at 8pm, well into the evening cool.

7. The Trail at a Luxury Resort — With Prizes | 5 July | Vila Galé

The 8th Trail Summer Challenge S.A. – Vila Galé takes place at one of Portugal’s most recognised hotel groups, combining a competitive trail race with the infrastructure of a resort. It’s an unusual format — and one that has grown in reputation for its organisation, its prizes, and its ability to attract a competitive mid-summer field when most events have gone quiet.

A trail race where the finish line actually delivers — showers, food, and a pool within reach. That’s a summer race done right.

8. The Night Trail That Gets More Technical | 25 July | Lourinhã

Trail Noturno de Toledo — TNT 2026 is a night trail in Lourinhã, with distances for all profiles. Technical terrain in varied landscape — the natural next step after road night runs.

July is when the Portuguese summer is at its hottest — which makes a night trail not just an atmospheric choice, but a logical one. TNT has built its reputation on a well-marked technical course, good organisation, and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the trip to Lourinhã.

The Summer Logic

Portugal’s summer race calendar isn’t built around volume — it’s built around variety. Night trails when the days are too hot. Beach half marathons for a different physical challenge. Mountain ultras with global credentials. Sunset border races with a cultural identity unlike anything else on the calendar.

The eight races above cover the full range. Pick the one that fits your June or July window — and browse the full calendar for everything else at racefinder.pt.
