MTB and Raid Cycling in Portugal: The Complete Guide for 2026

Mountain biking — known locally as BTT (bicicleta todo o terreno) — is one of the fastest-growing disciplines in endurance sport in Portugal. The reason isn’t hard to understand: the country offers a diversity of terrain that’s genuinely rare in Europe, from the mountain ranges of the north to the Alentejo plains, through coastal paths, pine forests, and trails connecting historic villages that have existed for centuries.

And an increasing number of road cyclists are discovering what mountain bikers have always known: riding off-road is a completely different experience — and an addictive one.

MTB, Raid and Gravel: Understanding the Differences

In Portugal, the terms BTT, raid and gravel are often used together, but they refer to slightly different things.

MTB / BTT (mountain bike / bicicleta todo o terreno) is the umbrella term for off-road cycling. It includes competitive formats like cross-country, enduro and downhill, but also recreational events and group rides on trails.

Raid typically refers to longer-distance or exploratory events, often with a touring or rally format — sometimes over one or several days, with routes crossing diverse landscapes. In Portugal, BTT raids are popular mass-participation events with more of an adventure spirit than pure competition.

BTT Passeio (leisure ride) is the most accessible version: non-competitive group events at a free pace, focused on the experience and social element. Ideal for beginners or anyone who wants an alternative to timed competition.

Gravel cycling sits between road and mountain bike — a discipline that combines road cycling speed with the freedom to explore mixed terrain on unpaved tracks. Gravel has exploded in popularity across Portugal over the past few years, with a growing calendar of dedicated events.

Why Portugal is One of Europe’s Best MTB Destinations

Portugal’s natural conditions for mountain biking are exceptional:

Terrain variety: From beach to mountain, through pine forests, vineyards and schist landscapes, each region offers a completely different experience. You can ride technical singletrack in the morning and a flat coastal path in the afternoon.

Climate: The temperate climate allows year-round riding. Even in winter, the central and southern interior offer dry days and rideable trails — something that riders from northern Europe come specifically for.

Community: MTB has an extremely active community in Portugal, with local groups in virtually every municipality. Getting into this world usually means getting into a social network of people who share the same passion.

Events for all levels: Portugal has a strong tradition of mass-participation MTB events — multiple distances, well-marked routes, and a festive atmosphere. You don’t need to be a competitive athlete to take part and have an extraordinary experience.

Essential Gear for Getting Started

The bike: To get started, any hardtail mountain bike (front suspension only) in good condition will do. There’s no need to invest in carbon or full suspension — the terrain at beginner and intermediate events is entirely compatible with entry-level equipment.

Helmet: Mandatory at all organised events. A standard MTB helmet (not a road cycling helmet) is sufficient for cross-country and leisure events.

Gloves: Protect your hands in falls and add comfort on the handlebars during longer rides.

Hydration system: Hydration pack or water bottles. For events over 30 km, a pack with a reservoir is far more practical than relying solely on aid stations.

Basic tools: Spare inner tube, multi-tool and portable pump. A puncture mid-trail is much easier to handle with the right kit.

MTB and Gravel Events with Open Registrations

Fiaba BTT Raid/Passeio 2026 One of the most popular events on the list, Fiaba BTT combines raid and leisure ride formats in an inclusive structure that attracts both experienced athletes and families riding together. With varied course options and a festival atmosphere, it’s an outstanding entry point into the world of BTT events.

Passeio BTT — Terras de Oiã 2026 A leisure format event in Oliveira do Bairro, in the Bairrada region — free pace, group riding, and a route through one of Portugal’s most scenic wine-producing areas. A relaxed first experience in organised BTT events.

Gravel Fest For those who prefer gravel — the discipline that combines road cycling efficiency with off-road freedom. Gravel Fest is one of the best-received events on the national calendar, with routes that explore backroads and rural tracks through some of Portugal’s most beautiful interior landscapes.

The Gravel Revolution

Over the past few years, gravel cycling has transformed the cycling calendar globally — and Portugal has been no exception. Between the road and the mountain bike, gravel bikes are versatile, fast on unpaved tracks, and capable of moderate off-road terrain.

If you come from road cycling and want to try natural terrain without jumping straight into technical MTB, gravel is the ideal bridge. Portugal’s enormous network of rural paths, forestry roads and ancient tracks makes it one of the best gravel destinations in Europe — and events are catching up to reflect this.
