Triathlon or Duathlon: What’s the Best Way to Start in Endurance Sports?

Over the last few years, triathlon and duathlon have grown significantly in Portugal. More and more athletes are looking for challenges beyond running and starting to explore multisport formats that combine different disciplines into a single race.

But for beginners, one question often comes up: is it better to start with triathlon or duathlon?

The truth is that both can be excellent entry points into endurance sports — it mostly depends on your background, confidence level, and goals.

What’s the Difference Between Triathlon and Duathlon?

The main difference is simple:

Triathlon

Combines:

  • swimming,
  • cycling,
  • running.

Duathlon

Replaces swimming with an extra run:

  • running,
  • cycling,
  • running.

For many runners, duathlon feels more accessible, especially for those who are not yet comfortable swimming in open water.

Why Duathlon Can Be the Perfect Starting Point

A lot of athletes are interested in triathlon but feel intimidated by the swimming portion.

And that’s completely normal.

Open-water swimming is very different from swimming in a pool:

  • reduced visibility,
  • race anxiety,
  • physical contact with other athletes,
  • navigation challenges,
  • changing sea conditions.

Duathlon removes that initial barrier and allows athletes to focus on:

  • pacing,
  • transitions,
  • cycling,
  • and adapting to the multisport format.

For runners especially, duathlon is often a very natural first step into endurance racing.

Tips for Beginners

Don’t Start With Long Distances

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is assuming they need to jump straight into long or extremely demanding races.

Today there are many beginner-friendly options:

  • super sprint,
  • sprint,
  • short duathlons,
  • beginner triathlons,
  • accessible race formats.

Your first race should be about gaining experience, not chasing performance.

Practice Your Transitions

Many athletes train running, cycling, and swimming… but forget to train transitions.

And transitions are where a lot of time gets lost.

Learning:

  • how to change equipment quickly,
  • how to organize your transition area,
  • mounting and dismounting the bike,
  • adapting your pace between disciplines,

can completely change your race experience.

Cycling Is Often the Key Discipline

In both triathlon and duathlon, cycling usually represents the biggest portion of total race time.

Building a strong aerobic base on the bike is one of the fastest ways to improve overall performance.

And the good news is: you do not need a top-tier bike to start participating.

Choose Beginner-Friendly Events

The atmosphere of the event makes a huge difference during your first experience.

Smaller and well-organized races are often ideal for:

  • learning,
  • feeling less pressure,
  • understanding how the format works,
  • building confidence.

Portugal currently offers several beginner-friendly multisport events across the country.

Charity Races in Portugal: Running with Purpose

There is a particular kind of race where crossing the finish line carries a different weight.
