Travelling to Portugal? Why not return home with a medal, a new story and another finish line behind you?

A racecation combines a holiday with participation in a sporting event. Instead of choosing only a destination, you also choose a running race, trail, granfondo or hybrid competition that allows you to experience the country differently.

You can race by the sea in the Algarve, explore Madeira’s trails, cycle through Serra da Lousã or compete inside the Estoril racing circuit. Your trip can still include beaches, local food, nature and historic towns, but now it also has a goal, a bib and a finish line.

1. Camacha Trail: discover Madeira’s mountain interior

2 August 2026 | Camacha, Madeira
Discipline: trail running

Madeira is known for its mountains, levadas and dramatic landscapes. Camacha Trail turns those surroundings into a sporting experience.

The event takes place in Camacha, in the municipality of Santa Cruz, and follows circular routes. Its programme includes a long trail, a short trail and a youth race, providing options for different experience levels.

It is a good choice for travellers who want to combine a few days in Funchal with an event in the island’s mountainous interior. Arrive early enough to adjust to the terrain and keep at least one recovery day free after the race.

2. Hybrid Day Estoril: compete on an iconic racing circuit

22 August 2026 | Estoril, Cascais
Discipline: hybrid fitness

Not every racecation needs to take place on roads or trails. Hybrid Day Estoril is held at the Estoril racing circuit and combines running with functional fitness stations.

The challenge consists of eight running segments of approximately one kilometre, alternating with eight stations such as the SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, rowing, lunges and wall balls.

Athletes can enter Singles, Doubles and Relay categories, with both Open and Pro divisions. It is an exciting option for anyone visiting Lisbon and Cascais who wants to add a distinctive challenge to the trip.

3. Ecotur Skymarathon Porto Moniz: mountains above the Atlantic

30 August 2026 | Porto Moniz, Madeira
Discipline: skyrunning and trail running

For athletes seeking a more demanding Madeira experience, Ecotur Skymarathon Porto Moniz combines mountain racing, nature and travel.

The programme includes a Skymarathon, a Skyrace and a Mini event, meaning participation is not limited to athletes ready to tackle the main distance.

Porto Moniz is also a great base for exploring Madeira’s northern coast, including its natural pools, viewpoints and walking routes. Leave enough time to recover after the event: the island’s climbs and descents may be as memorable as the views.

The Algarve is not only a beach destination. It can also provide the setting for your next finish line.

The Castro Marim Half Marathon starts at 8 pm, avoiding the hottest hours of the day and creating a different race atmosphere. Participants can choose between the 21.097 km half marathon and a 10.5 km road race.

The start and finish are located in Altura. You can spend a few days at the beach before the event and leave the following day free to recover and explore Castro Marim, Tavira or Vila Real de Santo António. Registration can be completed directly through RaceFinder.

7. Ovar Half Marathon: combine the race with Porto and Aveiro

4 October 2026 | Ovar, Aveiro
Discipline: road running

The Ovar Half Marathon reaches its 36th edition in 2026 and provides several ways to take part.

Alongside the 21.0975 km half marathon, the programme includes a 10 km race, a recreational walk and a free children’s event. This makes it suitable for competitive runners, mixed-ability groups and families.

Ovar is located between Porto and Aveiro, allowing you to include both cities in the same trip. Registration prices are organised in stages, so booking early may also help you manage the overall travel budget.

8. Trail Costa Vicentina: turn race weekend into an Alentejo escape

8 November 2026 | Santiago do Cacém, Setúbal
Discipline: trail running

Trail Costa Vicentina is an appealing option for travellers looking for nature, rural trails and an experience away from Portugal’s main cities.

Its location allows you to combine the event with a journey through the Alentejo coast, including Santiago do Cacém, Porto Covo, Vila Nova de Milfontes and other nearby destinations.

Before registering, check the available distances, elevation gain, mandatory equipment and time limits. Coastal and rural routes may include wind, sand, mud and uneven surfaces that significantly affect the difficulty.

How to choose the right event for your trip

The most beautiful event is not always the one that fits your itinerary best. Consider four practical points before booking.

Location and transport

Check the distance between the airport, accommodation, bib collection and starting area. Some events take place outside major cities and may require a car.

Equipment transport

Travelling with a bicycle, trail-running pack or competition equipment requires additional planning. Check the airline’s rules and whether rental options are available at the destination.

Travel schedule

Avoid booking demanding activities immediately before or after the event. Leave enough time for bib collection, recovery and possible schedule changes.

Regulations and entry requirements

Some events require a federation licence, one-day insurance, a medical certificate, mandatory equipment or a minimum age. Read the regulations before purchasing non-refundable flights or accommodation.

Do not simply visit Portugal. Cross a finish line here.

A race can take you to regions that may never appear on a traditional tourist itinerary. It can also turn a normal holiday into a memory built around preparation, achievement and community.

Choose the destination. Find the event. Secure your place.
