There’s Still Time to Set a Big Goal for 2026
August is already well underway, and it can feel like your race calendar for the year is pretty much decided.
It isn’t.
There are still more than four months left in 2026 and, depending on where you are right now, that is enough time to choose a new goal, bring some structure back into your training and finish the year with a race you are genuinely excited about.
And that goal does not necessarily have to be a marathon. It could be running your first 10K, finally going after a PB, making your half marathon debut or choosing a challenge that feels completely different from what you usually do.
The question is less “Do I still have time?” and more: what actually makes sense to start preparing for now?
I Just Want to Have a Race on the Calendar Again
Maybe you raced a lot earlier in the year and slowed down over the summer. Or maybe you kept training, but without a specific goal.
In that case, you do not need to jump straight into something huge.
Having a race booked for September can already be enough to give the next few weeks of training a bit more purpose.
One option: Grande Prémio Caldas de São Jorge
The Grande Prémio Caldas de São Jorge takes place on 20 September, in Santa Maria da Feira, with a main race of 8.3 km. The event also includes a walk and races for younger athletes.
It is an interesting distance for anyone looking to get back into racing without immediately committing to a long training block.
Your goal: get back on the start line and rebuild consistency.
I Want to Run a Faster 5K or 10K
The next step does not always have to mean running further.
You can spend the next few months working on speed and finish the year running a distance you already know, just better.
There is another advantage too: 5K and 10K races are relatively easy to fit into a season. You can choose one as your main goal and still race others during the build-up without turning the whole season into one long recovery cycle.
One option: Bimbo Global Race
The Bimbo Global Race takes place on 27 September in Belém, with both 5K and 10K options, as well as a walk and children’s races.
Both races take place on road courses beside the Tagus, starting and finishing at Praça do Império.
It is a particularly good option if you want to set a goal for September without having to increase your training volume too much.
Your goal: improve your 5K or 10K.
I Want to Finally Run a Half Marathon
This is probably one of the best goals to set at this point in the year.
If you are already running consistently and have a decent base, the next couple of months can give you a very clear training block: gradually extend your long runs, build confidence over the distance and arrive in autumn ready to take on 21.1 km.
One option: Leiria Half Marathon
The Leiria Half Marathon takes place on 18 October and offers both the half marathon and a 10K.
That also gives you some flexibility. You can make the 21.1 km your big goal or, if the timing does not feel quite right yet, use the 10K as a stepping stone.
Your goal: make your half marathon debut or chase a new PB over 21.1 km.
I Want to Finish the Year With a Marathon
This one depends much more on where your fitness is right now.
If you are already running consistently, have a solid mileage base and a marathon was already somewhere in your plans, there are still major autumn races ahead.
If you are starting almost from scratch now, choosing 42.195 km simply because there is still a marathon available in November is probably not the best reason to sign up.
One option: Porto Marathon
The Porto Marathon returns on 8 November. Alongside the 42.195 km race, the event also includes a 10K and a 6 km walk.
The marathon follows much of Porto’s Atlantic waterfront and has a six-hour time limit.
So even if the full marathon does not make sense for you this year, you can still be part of the event through a shorter distance.
Your goal: finish 2026 with 42.195 km, or experience marathon day through the 10K.
I Want a Challenge That Is Not About Running Faster
PBs are not the only way to measure progress.
Maybe you have already done plenty of 10Ks, half marathons and even marathons, and what motivates you now is taking on a completely different type of road race.
One option: Estrela Road Challenge
The Estrela Road Challenge takes place on 25 October in Manteigas and takes road running into Serra da Estrela.
The event includes a 21 km uphill race with 1,600 metres of elevation gain, a 42 km uphill and downhill format and a relay option.
This is definitely not about finding the flattest possible road and chasing a PB.
Quite the opposite.
Your goal: swap the stopwatch for a challenge focused on strength and endurance.
I Just Want to Finish the Year on a Start Line
That is also a completely valid goal.
Not everything needs to be part of a major 12-week training block or end with a personal record.
Sometimes booking a race for December is simply a way to stay consistent during the months when it becomes very easy to say, “I’ll start training again in January.”
Portugal’s traditional São Silvestre races are perfect for that. The RaceFinder calendar already includes events such as the São Silvestre de Lisboa on 26 December, São Silvestre de Lagoa on 27 December and the historic São Silvestre da Amadora on 31 December.
Your goal: finish 2026 running.
Four Months Can Still Change Your Entire Running Year
It is easy to get to August and think that the big goals for 2026 have already passed.
But you probably still have more time than you think.
You could be six weeks away from racing again. Two months away from a half marathon. Already building towards a marathon that has been on your radar for a while. Or simply looking for that one race that makes you want to follow a training plan again.
You do not need to choose the most ambitious goal.
You need to choose one that makes you want to start working towards it now.
On RaceFinder, you can explore races still taking place in 2026, compare distances and dates, and find the one that makes sense for where you are today.
There are still plenty of start lines ahead. The next one could be yours.
