Portuguese Triathlon Federation Opens Registrations for Initial Triathlon Referee Courses

The Portuguese Triathlon Federation has announced two new Initial Referee Courses for people interested in becoming part of the triathlon officiating community in Portugal.

The initiative aims to strengthen the referee community and raise awareness about the importance of officiating in the sport.

“Referees are a fundamental part of Triathlon — without them, there are no competitions,” highlights the Portuguese Triathlon Federation.

The courses are open not only to current athletes, but also to friends, family members, sports enthusiasts, and anyone interested in getting involved in the sport from a different perspective.

Dates and Locations

Participants can choose the date and location that is most convenient for them.

Lisbon

📍 Centro Qualifica, Castelo NORTE, Portas de Benfica, Lisbon

⏰ 09:30–13:00 and 14:30–18:30

São Mamede de Infesta

How Does the Course Work?

The training includes:

  • one full day of theoretical training
  • followed by a practical component with attendance at 4 different races

The course introduces participants to triathlon regulations, officiating methodologies, and competition procedures.

Course Program

Topics covered include:

  • introduction to the Portuguese Triathlon Federation
  • evolution of triathlon over time
  • sports legislation and regulations
  • World Triathlon rules
  • officiating methodologies
  • competition procedures

The course will be led by Anabela Santos.

Evaluation

Participants will be evaluated through:

  • a written test
  • practical participation in races

Who Can Participate?

The course is open to anyone interested in triathlon officiating.

Young participants must be at least 18 years old when officiating their first race as trainee referees.

The Federation also highlights that this is an excellent opportunity for athletes who want to better understand the rules and structure behind triathlon competitions.

Registration

The course registration fee is €20.

Registration deadlines:

  • Lisbon: until May 15
  • São Mamede de Infesta: until June 13
