If you’re planning to run a half marathon in Portugal in 2026, there are several great options across the country. From island races in the Azores to scenic vineyard routes in the Douro Valley and fast coastal courses in northern Portugal, the calendar offers something for every runner.

Here are some half marathons in Portugal in 2026 worth considering depending on your goals this season.

Start the season with spring half marathons

Spring is one of the best times of the year to race 21 km in Portugal, with mild temperatures and varied race locations.

The season begins with the XXXIV Meia Maratona dos Bravos on May 1st in Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira Island, Azores). This long-standing regional race offers a unique island running experience and a welcoming local atmosphere.

Just a few days later, the 2ª Meia Maratona do Concelho de Santiago takes place on May 3rd in Santiago do Cacém, a solid option for runners looking for an accessible early-season challenge in southern Portugal.

On May 10th, runners have several half marathon options across the country:

These races offer different course profiles and atmospheres, from northern inland routes to coastal running experiences closer to Lisbon and Porto.

Run through the Douro wine region

One of the most scenic races on the Portuguese road running calendar is the Meia Maratona do Vinho do Douro, taking place on May 24th in Peso da Régua.

The course follows the Douro River and passes through vineyard landscapes classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, making it one of the most memorable half marathon routes in Portugal.

A half marathon in the Azores

If you enjoy combining racing with travel, the Meia Maratona Atlântico Ocidental 2026 on June 6th in Santa Cruz das Flores (Azores) offers a truly unique Atlantic island experience.

It’s an excellent choice for runners looking for something different from mainland races.

One of Portugal’s fastest half marathons

Later in the season, the Meia Maratona do Porto takes place on September 13th and remains one of the most popular half marathons in northern Portugal.

With a scenic route along the Douro River and the Atlantic coastline, it’s often chosen by runners aiming for a personal best or preparing for an autumn marathon.

Which half marathon should you choose in 2026?

Your ideal race depends on your goal:

  • looking for a fast course → Porto or Almada
  • scenic experience → Douro or the Azores
  • early-season race → Bravos or Santiago do Cacém
  • regional atmosphere → Cantarinhas or Cortegaça

Portugal offers a wide variety of half marathon experiences throughout the year, making it easy to find the right race for your training plan.
