Based on the 2026 running calendar in Portugal, we selected eight events that we specifically recommend for beginners — because they offer accessible short distances, pleasant courses, solid organisation and an inclusive atmosphere.

Note: always check updated dates and registration details on RaceFinder before signing up, as they may change.

1. REMAX White Women’s Run Coimbra — Coimbra

May 2 | Distances: 5 km, 5 km walk | Location: Coimbra

An event with one of the most accessible atmospheres in the spring urban race calendar. The 5 km route allows for a comfortable first race experience, with many first-time participants and a wide range of pacing levels.

The participatory nature of the event makes it particularly suitable for runners who want to try their first race without the pressure typical of larger competitions.

Why it’s ideal for beginners: short accessible distance, simple urban course and participatory atmosphere.

2. Mother’s Day Run — Lisbon

May 3 | Distances: 5 km, 10 km, 5 km walk, kids race | Location: Lisbon

One of the most family-oriented races in the Lisbon calendar. The 5 km option is especially suitable for first-time participants, with thousands of runners across all experience levels.

The variety of distances available allows you to choose the most comfortable format to start with, while keeping the relaxed atmosphere typical of spring races in the city.

Why it’s ideal for beginners: short distance available, family-friendly environment and strong participation from first-time runners.

3. Xistarca 40th Anniversary Run — Lisbon

May 9 | Distances: 5 km run, 5 km walk, 5 km relay, kids race, 5 km cycling event | Location: Lisbon

A commemorative event organised by one of the most experienced running event organisers in Portugal. The solid logistical structure and variety of formats make it especially accessible for first-time participants.

The possibility of joining the walk or relay creates interesting alternatives for those who prefer a less demanding first race experience.

Why it’s ideal for beginners: multiple participation formats available and experienced organisation.

4. Almada Half Marathon — Almada

May 10 | Distances: 5 km, 10 km, 21 km, kids race | Location: Almada

Despite its name, this is one of the races in the Lisbon area with one of the best structures for beginners thanks to the presence of a fully organised 5 km distance — with bib number, chip timing and full race conditions.

The course along the Tagus river adds a scenic element that helps make the experience more enjoyable for first-time participants.

Why it’s ideal for beginners: structured 5 km distance, riverfront route and easy access from Lisbon.

5. Wings for Life World Run — Lisbon

May 10 | Distances: dynamic format (approx. 3 km to 40 km) | Location: Lisbon

One of the most original race formats in the international running calendar. There is no fixed finish line — each participant runs until being caught by the catcher car, which determines the end of the race.

Distances vary dynamically depending on each runner’s pace, with examples ranging from 3 km, 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, 20 km and even 40 km. The event is also accessible to wheelchair participants, promoting inclusion.

Why it’s ideal for beginners: no fixed finish distance removes pressure related to pace or performance.

6. FPF Run — Oeiras

May 17 | Distances: 4 km walk, 10 km individual, 10 km relay | Location: Oeiras

A race with an accessible route along the Lisbon coastal area and a short walking distance particularly suitable for those looking to try their first participation.

The relay option also allows participation in a team format, which can make a first race experience easier and more approachable.

Why it’s ideal for beginners: short walk distance available and relay participation option.

7. Campa do Preto Run and Walk — Maia

May 31 | Distances: 5 km walk, 10 km | Location: Maia

A local event with a closer and more community-based atmosphere than large metropolitan races. The 5 km walk allows a comfortable first experience in an organised race environment.

Events like this are often the best entry point for runners who prefer starting in a calmer setting.

Why it’s ideal for beginners: welcoming atmosphere and short distance available.

How to choose your race on RaceFinder

The running calendar in Portugal includes hundreds of events every year — from 5 km races to ultramarathons, from road to trail, from Minho to the Algarve. For beginners, filtering that calendar can be the most difficult part.

On RaceFinder, you can explore all events organised by:

  • Distance — filter directly by 5 km, 10 km, or other distances
  • Region — find races near you without having to browse the entire calendar
  • Date — plan your season in advance
  • Type — road, trail, or both

For your first race, distance is the most important criterion. Start with a 5 km event, choose a location you would enjoy visiting, and don’t overthink the rest.

Checklist for race week

Final week before your first race:

  • Confirm the location, time and bib number — check the organiser’s email
  • Don’t wear brand new running shoes — use what you already know
  • Sleep well the night before — more important than the race morning itself
  • Eat normally on race day — avoid trying anything new
  • Arrive early — 30 to 45 minutes is enough to get comfortable with the environment
  • Start conservatively — the first kilometres are always faster than they should be
  • Enjoy the experience — you’re already doing something most people won’t do today

One last thing

Your first race rarely goes exactly as planned. The pace will feel different, emotions will show up at unexpected moments, and there’s a good chance that when you cross the finish line you’ll already be thinking about the next one.

That’s how it starts. Find yours on RaceFinder.

Lisbon Half Marathon 2027 ballot now open: how to apply and other half marathons to consider in Portugal

The entry process for the Hyundai Meia Maratona de Lisboa works differently from most races in Portugal.
