Lisbon Half Marathon 2027 ballot now open: how to apply and other half marathons to consider in Portugal

The entry process for the Hyundai Meia Maratona de Lisboa works differently from most races in Portugal.

Instead of opening registrations directly, participation begins through an official ballot because demand for bib numbers is significantly higher than the available places.

The ballot for the 2027 edition is now open, which makes this the right moment to plan your next 21 km challenge.

You can apply here.

And if you are not selected through the ballot, there are several excellent half marathons across Portugal worth considering.

How the Lisbon Half Marathon ballot works

Because the race receives strong international demand every year, participation begins with a ballot system rather than direct registration.

Runners submit their application first. Selected participants are then invited to complete their registration afterwards.

Entering the ballot early is the best strategy if Lisbon is on your 2027 race calendar.

Why the Lisbon Half Marathon is one of the most popular races in Portugal

Few races offer the experience of starting on the 25 de Abril Bridge and finishing in Belém.

The combination of:

a fast course
international atmosphere
strong organisation
and iconic scenery

makes it one of the most memorable half marathons in Portugal.

Still, it is far from the only strong 21 km option available.

Other half marathons in Portugal worth considering

If you are planning your first half marathon or looking for a new race this season, these events are excellent alternatives across different regions of the country.

Almada Half Marathon — Almada

May 10

Located just across the Tagus from Lisbon, this race offers a balanced course and accessible logistics for runners in the Lisbon region.

Why consider it: convenient location and strong option for runners preparing their first 21 km.

Meia Maratona das Cantarinhas — Bragança

May 10

A northern Portugal race with a strong local atmosphere and a quieter environment than large metropolitan races.

Why consider it: ideal for runners who prefer smaller race settings.

Meia-Maratona de Cortegaça — Cortegaça

May 10

One of the most traditional half marathons in Portugal, with a coastal setting that makes the experience especially enjoyable.

Why consider it: classic race atmosphere near the Atlantic coastline.

Douro Vinhateiro Half Marathon — Peso da Régua

May 24

One of the most scenic races in Portugal, running through the Douro Valley wine region.

Why consider it: unique landscape and unforgettable course experience.

Atlântico Ocidental Half Marathon — Flores Island

June 6

A rare opportunity to combine racing with one of Portugal’s most impressive island landscapes.

Why consider it: destination race experience in the Azores.

Douro Run Gondomar Half Marathon — Gondomar

June 7

A well-structured race near Porto with an accessible course suitable for runners preparing their first half marathon.

Why consider it: strong organisation and proximity to Porto.

Meia Maratona na Areia Analice Silva — Costa da Caparica

June 14

One of the most distinctive half marathons in Portugal, run entirely on sand along the Atlantic coastline.

Why consider it: a unique race experience unlike any traditional road event.

How to choose the right half marathon for you

When selecting your next 21 km race, consider:

course profile
location
season timing
race atmosphere

Some runners prefer large international races. Others enjoy smaller community events with a calmer environment.

Portugal offers both options throughout the year.
