Things Only Runners Understand: The Little Truths of the Running Life

Running is simple — shoes on, out the door, go.
But anyone who has ever trained consistently knows there’s a whole world of small rituals, emotional cycles and inside jokes that only runners understand.

If you’re part of the running community in Portugal, or anywhere else, chances are you’ll recognise yourself in at least a few of these.

And if you do, welcome — you’re among your people. 👟💛

1) “Today is a rest day”… but somehow you go for a run anyway

You planned to rest.
You know rest is important.
But the weather feels perfect, the legs feel light, and suddenly… you’re outside running.

Runners don’t always choose the run.
Sometimes, the run chooses the runner.

2) The camera roll full of nearly identical running photos

Your phone: 4,000 photos.
3,000 of them: you running.

But each one is different. You can feel it.
That one has better cadence.
That one captures “runner’s joy.”
And that one? New profile picture.

No explanation needed.

3) The watch decides the mood of the day

You finish the run feeling proud…
…and then your watch says: Unproductive.

And suddenly, your existential crisis begins.

We love our Garmins, Polars and Coros —
but sometimes they could learn to say “good job, proud of you” instead.

4) The post-run coffee is sacred

Is it about caffeine?
Is it about recovery?

No.
It’s about ritual.

The warm cup, the tired legs, the feeling of earning your morning — no medal compares.

5) After finishing a race, you immediately start searching for the next

You cross the finish line saying:
“Never again.”

One shower later:
“Okay but what if I train properly this time…”

And there you are:

Because Running Is More Than Running

It’s identity, community, joy, frustration, clarity, therapy, discipline and freedom.

If you saw yourself in at least one of these — you are a runner.
Speed doesn’t matter. Distance doesn’t matter.
If you run, you run. Full stop.
