
HYROX Is Coming to Portugal — And Hybrid Events Are Changing the Sport
If you follow anyone sporty on social media, chances are you’ve seen the word HYROX come up more than once lately. Race results, training videos, yellow vests, bib number shares. The phenomenon has arrived in Portugal — and it’s happening in just days.
From 1 to 3 May, Lisbon hosts the first-ever HYROX event in Portugal. It’s a moment that marks a real shift in the Portuguese sports landscape. But HYROX didn’t come alone: there’s a whole new generation of hybrid events growing across the country, and they’re all worth knowing.
What is HYROX — explained simply
HYROX is a fitness race with a fixed format that is identical worldwide: 8km of running split into 8 stages of 1km each, with a functional workout station after every kilometre. Always in the same order, always the same distances.
The eight exercises are: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpees Over the Bar, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges, and Wall Balls. No trail technique, no swimming, no cycling — running and functional strength, pure and simple.
What makes HYROX different from other events is exactly that standardisation. Every event follows the exact same race format, allowing for a comparable global leaderboard for all athletes. Your time in Lisbon can be directly compared with someone who raced in Berlin or New York. That creates a global community with a shared language.
There are categories for everyone: individual men and women, pro, doubles, mixed, and relay. You don’t need to be an elite athlete — most participants are regular people who train consistently and want a concrete goal.
HYROX Lisbon 2026 — the first ever in Portugal
HYROX Lisbon 2026 is more than just another stop on the calendar — it’s the first HYROX race ever held in Portugal, and that alone makes it special.

But HYROX isn’t the only one — Portugal has its own hybrid events
The growth of HYROX has created appetite for a type of event that Portugal was already building in its own way. There are national hybrid events with their own identity, unique courses, and dates spread across the 2026 calendar.
💪 Hyberic Run 2026 — Chaves, Vila Real | 30 May
An obstacle and running race in the north of Portugal, set in a natural environment. It combines running with physical obstacles in an accessible and competitive format. One of the reference events in this format in Portugal.
🌀 VORTEX — Portimão | 20 June
VORTEX is a Portuguese hybrid event with a strong visual identity and a challenging format. Running and functional exercises in a high-energy environment. One of the national events to keep a close eye on.
🎮 RFM Performance Manz Games — Lisbon | 4 & 5 July
Organised by RFM in partnership with Manz, this is one of the hybrid events with the most media visibility in Portugal. It combines physical performance with entertainment in a format that attracts both athletes and spectators. A unique event in the national calendar.
🏙️ Hybrid Day Leiria | 17 & 18 July
A hybrid event with a strong local and regional identity in Leiria. Accessible format for those wanting to try this type of race for the first time, with solid organisation and an active community.
⚡ HYGOES 2026 – Góis | 12 September
Another national hybrid event growing on the Portuguese calendar. Running and functional exercises in a competitive and accessible format. Perfect for those who’ve already tried HYROX and want to keep training and competing in this format throughout the year.
Why are hybrid events growing so fast?
The answer is simple: these events speak to a generation of people who no longer identify purely as “a runner” or purely as “a gym person.” They run, they train strength, they do CrossFit, they do HIIT — and they want a race that brings all of that together.
HYROX made that format mainstream globally. But in Portugal, the ground was already being prepared. National hybrid events grew before HYROX arrived, and they now benefit from the hype and attention the format is generating.
For athletes, the appeal is clear: you don’t need to be a specialist. You need to be consistent, train running and strength together, and show up on the day.
How to train for a hybrid event
If you’ve never done this type of race, the starting point is simpler than you might think.
Running: The running volume in these events is real — in HYROX it’s 8km total. Being comfortable running 10km is a solid base.
Functional strength: The exercises — whether in HYROX or national events — are movements that any functional gym trains: rowing, weighted lunges, wall balls, sled push and pull. You don’t need to be a weightlifter — you need to be efficient with moderate loads while fatigued.
Combined training: The key is training both together. Running sessions followed by a strength circuit, or a strength circuit followed by running, teach your body to manage the transition — which is exactly what these events demand.
