Vest. Headlamp. Food. Soft flasks. That jacket you hope you will not need. More snacks than seems reasonable.

For a 10K, forgetting something might be annoying. On an ultra trail, several hours and a few mountains later, a small mistake can become a very big one.

So, what should actually go in your bag for an ultra trail?

The exact answer depends on the race, the distance, the weather and how remote the course is. But there are a few essentials that deserve a place in almost every long-distance trail runner’s setup.

Start With the Race Regulations — Not Your Backpack

Before packing anything, open the race regulations.

Mandatory equipment can vary significantly from one event to another. A summer trail may have very different requirements from a mountain ultra taking place overnight, and organisers may change the required kit depending on weather conditions.

Major ultra trail organisations are very clear on this point: mandatory equipment is considered the minimum needed for runner safety, particularly on remote trails, and equipment checks can take place before or during the race.

In other words, use the list below as a starting point — but the race’s official regulations always come first.

So, What’s in the Bag?

If I were laying out a typical ultra trail kit on the floor, this is what I would expect to see:

Hydration: hydration vest, soft flasks or bottles, and enough carrying capacity to cover the longest distance between aid stations.

Nutrition: gels, bars, fruit, sandwiches or whatever you already know your stomach tolerates after several hours of running. Ultras are not the time to discover a new favourite energy gel.

Weather protection: waterproof jacket, an extra layer, buff, gloves or cap depending on the season and location.

Safety equipment: charged phone, whistle, emergency blanket, headlamp and spare power or batteries when the race includes darkness.

Navigation: the race route downloaded to your watch or phone when appropriate, especially for more remote events.

Comfort essentials: anti-chafe product, sunscreen, tissues, spare socks and a small amount of anything you regularly use during long training sessions.

Race essentials: bib, timing chip if supplied separately, ID and anything specifically requested by the organiser.

Optional extras: poles when allowed, a reusable cup, sunglasses and a small power bank for especially long events.

The important part is not to carry every piece of trail-running equipment you own. It is to carry what you will realistically need while still being prepared for things to go wrong.

An ultra vest should feel like part of your running setup, not luggage.

Your Bag Should Change With the Race

There is no single “ultra trail bag”, because a 46K trail and a 100K mountain race create very different problems.

Take the Douro Ultra Trail 2026, for example. The event includes a 100 km Ultra Trail, alongside 50 km, 28 km and 15 km distances. The 100K also includes a drop-bag service, which changes the way you can plan clothing, nutrition and equipment across the race.

Explore the Douro Ultra Trail on RaceFinder

For a race like the Ultra Trail Serra de Grândola, the challenge is different. Its longest distance is 46 km, followed by 26 km and 13.5 km options. It is still long enough for nutrition, hydration and weather management to matter, but you may be able to run with a considerably simpler setup than you would use for a 100K.

Discover the Ultra Trail Serra de Grândola

And then there are races where the whole concept of “what’s in my bag?” changes completely.

What About a Backyard Ultra?

A Backyard Ultra is a different packing game.

Instead of running from one point to another, athletes complete a 6.706 km loop every hour, returning to the same base between laps.

At the Backyard Ultra by CoimbraTrail, for example, runners return to an assistance area where they can rest, eat, hydrate, change clothes and replace equipment before heading out again.

That means your setup can look less like one carefully packed backpack and more like a miniature aid station.

A chair. Different shoes. Dry socks. Warm clothes. A box of food. Chargers. Maybe even a blanket.

And because you never really know how long your race will last, planning becomes part of the challenge itself.

See the Backyard Ultra by CoimbraTrail on RaceFinder

The Most Important Rule: Test Everything Before Race Day

The best ultra trail bag is not necessarily the lightest one.

It is the one you have already trained with.

Run with the vest when it is full. Find out whether the bottles bounce. See whether you can reach your food without removing the bag. Test your jacket in actual rain. Discover which pocket you instinctively reach for when you are tired.

And, perhaps most importantly, eat the food you intend to eat during the race.

After eight hours on your feet, tiny inconveniences have a remarkable ability to become enormous problems.

Pack for the Race You Are Actually Running

The temptation before an ultra is to prepare for every possible scenario.

But good packing is really about understanding the event.

How far is it between aid stations? Will you run through the night? Is there a drop bag? How exposed is the route? What does the organiser provide? What is mandatory? What have you successfully used during training?

Answer those questions first.

Then pack your bag.

Because in an ultra trail, every item you carry should have a reason for being there — and ideally, you will finish the race having needed far fewer emergency items than you brought.

Looking for somewhere to put your ultra setup to the test? Explore upcoming trail and ultra trail races across Portugal on RaceFinder.

Find your next trail race on RaceFinder

There is something strangely satisfying about laying everything out on the floor the night before a big race.
