Choosing the right one can be a little harder.

With so many events available — from local 5Ks and road races to trail runs, half marathons, triathlons and cycling challenges — it can be tempting to simply pick the race with the best location or the most impressive finish line.

But the right event depends on much more than distance.

Whether you’re looking for a new personal best, a weekend adventure or simply something to keep you motivated, here are six things worth considering before signing up for your next race.

1. Start with what you want from the experience

Before looking at distances or dates, think about why you want to race.

Are you chasing a personal best? Looking for your first big challenge? Wanting to explore somewhere new? Or simply searching for an event to enjoy with friends?

Your goal can completely change what the “right” race looks like.

If speed is the priority, a road event with a relatively fast course might make more sense. Something like the Bimbo Global Race in Lisbon, with 5K and 10K options around Belém, can be an interesting choice for runners who want the race atmosphere without committing to a long-distance training block.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a bigger project, an event such as the EDP Lisbon Marathon, taking place over the full 42.195K distance in October, requires a very different level of preparation.

Not every race needs to be about performance. Sometimes having something exciting on the calendar is reason enough.

2. Be realistic about the distance

It can be tempting to jump straight to a longer distance, especially when you see friends signing up for half marathons, marathons or ultras.

But your next event should fit your current training and the amount of time you realistically have to prepare.

If you’re already comfortably running 10K, for example, progressing towards a half marathon may make sense. The Meia Maratona Cidade de Ovar, on 4 October, is a good example of an event where runners can choose between the full 21.1K distance and a 10K race.

Having different distances within the same event can also make it easier to choose a challenge that actually matches where you are now rather than simply choosing the longest option.

The same applies to cycling, triathlon and trail events: distance is only one part of the challenge.

3. Check the course, not just the kilometres

A 15K trail race and a 15K road race are two very different days out.

Before registering, look at the elevation gain, terrain, technical sections, cut-off times, aid stations and expected weather conditions.

This becomes particularly important in trail running. An event such as Penacova Trail do Centro, for example, offers distances ranging from 16K to 46K across trail terrain — meaning that choosing between them is about much more than simply looking at the number of kilometres.

Triathlon can make the contrast even clearer.

The Costa Nova Triathlon follows the Olympic format of a 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run, while the Estrela Xtreme Triathlon adds significant climbing and mountain terrain across its different distances. Two triathlons can therefore demand very different preparation even from experienced athletes.

Understanding the course in advance helps you choose an event that matches both your ability and what you actually enjoy.

4. Think about timing

The race might look perfect, but does the date work for your training?

Ideally, your event should give you enough time to prepare without feeling rushed.

If you’re looking at a half marathon in October, for example, your current ability and the number of weeks available to train should be part of the decision — not something you think about only after registering.

Also consider what happens around the event. Holidays, work commitments, travel and other races can all influence how much training and recovery time you’ll realistically have.

And if you’re planning several events during the season, avoid treating every race as your main goal. A 5K or 10K can work as a useful intermediate event before a half marathon, while a shorter trail or triathlon can be part of the preparation for a bigger challenge later in the season.

Some races can simply be part of the journey towards another start line.

5. Consider the atmosphere

Race day isn’t only about the course.

Some athletes love big events with crowded start lines, music, spectators and plenty happening around the race village. Others prefer smaller events where the atmosphere feels more relaxed and personal.

Neither is better — they simply offer different experiences.

The Bimbo Global Race, for instance, has a strong community element, with several race formats and activities taking place around the event in Belém.

A smaller local trail can offer something completely different: fewer runners, more time on the trails and a closer connection to the local community.

Think about which environment will make you most excited to turn up on race morning.

6. Choose something that genuinely excites you

Training becomes much easier when the event at the end of it is something you’re looking forward to.

Maybe it’s running through a city you’ve never explored before. Maybe it’s your first trail race. Maybe it’s finally trying a triathlon, gravel event or another type of endurance challenge.

And your next race doesn’t always need to be longer or harder than your last one.

You might move from road running to trail, try a shorter but faster distance, enter a triathlon for the first time or simply choose a race somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit.

The best next challenge is not necessarily the biggest one.

It’s the one that gives you a reason to keep moving.

Find your next challenge

There are hundreds of events taking place across Portugal throughout the year, covering running, trail, cycling, swimming, duathlon, triathlon and hybrid events.

On RaceFinder, you can explore more than 500 races by sport, location and date, making it easier to compare different options and find an event that fits what you’re looking for.

Whether your next start line is a local 10K, the Meia Maratona de Ovar, a mountain trail or your first triathlon, the important part is finding a challenge that makes you want to train for it.

Because sometimes the best motivation isn’t another training plan.

It’s having a date on the calendar that you can’t wait to reach.

Finding a race is easy.
