RaceFinder already features several hybrid events across the country, with individual, doubles and team formats.

So, what exactly is a hybrid race?

There is no single format.

Some competitions follow the structure that has become internationally popular: run a set distance, complete a functional station, then repeat the process several times.

Others adapt the running distances, exercises, weights and even team sizes.

That variety is exactly what makes the discipline so interesting.

A strong runner may quickly discover that running after pushing a sled feels very different. And someone who is very strong in the gym may realise that several blocks of running completely change the way those exercises feel.

In the end, being fast is not enough. Being strong is not enough either.

You need to be able to do both when you are already tired.

For anyone ready to try it now: Hybrid Day Estoril 2026

📅 22 August 2026
📍 Autódromo do Estoril, Cascais

Probably one of the most unusual settings for a first hybrid race.

Hybrid Day Estoril takes fitness racing to the Estoril Circuit, combining eight running segments of approximately 1K with eight functional stations.

There are Singles, Doubles and Relay options, including Open and Pro divisions. The stations include SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jump, Row, Farmer’s Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls.

For doubles racing in the Azores: Baleeiros Hybrid Games

📅 27 August 2026
📍 Lajes do Pico, Azores

Not every hybrid race has to follow exactly the same formula.

At Baleeiros Hybrid Games, the competition is held in men’s, women’s or mixed doubles, with the course and exercises defined by the organisers.

And, let’s be fair, doing a hybrid race on Pico Island already makes for a pretty strong experience before the competition even starts.

To test a HYROX-inspired format: THRYV HYROX Simulation

📅 5 September 2026
📍 Charneca da Caparica, Almada

If you are curious about this type of competition and want to find out how your body responds to the run-station-run format, THRYV’s simulation is a very direct way to experience it.

There are eight 1K running segments, alternating with SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jump, Row, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls.

Open and Pro categories are available, both individually and in doubles, with electronic timing and a live leaderboard.

For anyone who would rather share the suffering: HYGOES 2026

📅 12 September 2026
📍 Góis, Coimbra

You will not be doing this one alone.

HYGOES is raced exclusively in men’s, women’s or mixed doubles. The format combines 8K of running, divided into 1K laps, with eight functional stations.

Both athletes complete the running segments together and can divide the work at the stations between them.

It can be a great entry point for anyone looking at an individual hybrid race and thinking: “This looks fun, but I would rather bring someone with me.”

Fair enough.

For a different take on the format: Fátima Games

📅 12 September 2026
📍 Fátima, Ourém

On the same day, Fátima hosts a slightly different version of hybrid fitness.

Instead of the traditional 1K running blocks, competitors complete 800-metre running segments, alternating with eight functional exercises.

Stations include Ski, Slam Ball Throw, Air Bike, Burpee Broad Jumps, Row, Farmer Carry, Dumbbell Walking Lunges and Wall Balls.

There are men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, relays, and even Kids and Teens categories.

It is a good example of how the hybrid scene is starting to move beyond one single competition model.

For racing in the Algarve: Vortex September 2026

📅 19 September 2026
📍 Faro

At Vortex, the format becomes slightly faster.

The competition takes place at the Faro athletics track and is divided into eight rounds, with 800-metre running segments and a final 200-metre sprint.

In between, athletes face SkiErg, Sled Push, Burpee Broad Jump, Row, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls.

There are Solo, Doubles and Relay options, including mixed teams.

So whether you want to take on the whole challenge alone or share the workload, there is plenty of flexibility.

To take fitness racing into the streets: PRIME HYBRID ESPINHO FITNESS RACING

📅 26 September 2026
📍 Espinho, Aveiro

PRIME turns central Espinho into a fully outdoor fitness racing course.

The format is 8 × 1K running, with the functional stations concentrated in the RoxZone at Praça Progresso.

There are individual and doubles categories, both Open and Pro, including mixed doubles.

It is an interesting option for anyone who likes the classic structure of this type of competition but wants to experience it in an urban outdoor setting.

And October still has more to offer

Portugal’s hybrid season does not end in September.

In the Azores, the Azores Hybrid Race takes place on 17 and 18 October at Portas do Mar in Ponta Delgada, with individual, doubles and relay categories.

On the mainland, Crossers – The Hybrid Race comes to Loures on 18 October, combining running with eight functional stations in a format raced exclusively in men’s, women’s or mixed doubles.

So there is still plenty on the calendar for anyone deciding that regular running is no longer complicated enough.

Which format makes the most sense for you?

If you are thinking about trying a hybrid race for the first time, do not choose based on the date alone.

Look at the format.

Individual or doubles?
If you are not sure how you will respond to the stations, racing with someone else can make your first experience more approachable.

Open or Pro?
There is no prize for choosing a category above your current level.

1K running blocks or shorter segments?
For a runner, this might sound like a small detail. After the third or fourth station, it will not feel like one.

Which exercises are included?
Sled Push, lunges and wall balls demand very different things from SkiErg, rowing or farmer carries. Knowing what is coming also helps you prepare properly.

Running is no longer the only way to reach your next start line

Hybrid events are creating an interesting space between two worlds.

You do not need to stop being a runner to start working on strength. And you do not need to live in the gym to try fitness racing.

That mix may be exactly what is attracting so many people: the goal is no longer simply to run faster or lift more weight.

It becomes about finding out what you can do when you have to combine both.

On RaceFinder, you can explore hybrid events across Portugal, compare formats, dates and categories, and find the race that best matches the challenge you are looking for.

Discover upcoming hybrid events on RaceFinder

Your next start line can still involve running.

There might just be a sled waiting for you halfway through.

For a long time, choosing an event was relatively simple.
