Others earn their place because of the destination.

A destination race can be the perfect excuse to extend the summer in the Algarve, spend a weekend by the sea, discover a new city or take on mountain roads that would never normally be part of a training run.

We selected eight road races still taking place in Portugal in 2026 that, at the time of writing, still have entries available. Sold-out events, such as the Porto and Lisbon half marathons, have not been included.

Praia da Vieira Run and Walk

8 August 2026 · Praia da Vieira · 8 km

The day can begin at the beach and end with a race bib.

The Praia da Vieira Run starts and finishes on Avenida Marginal in the late afternoon. The main race is approximately 8 km long and includes a refreshment station halfway through the course. An 8 km walk is also available.

The Atlantic setting and the 5:30 pm start give the event a completely different atmosphere from a typical Sunday morning race. It is an accessible option for anyone looking for a summer break without having to prepare for a long distance. Entry includes the official T-shirt and a snack bag.

Flor de Sal Half Marathon

12 September 2026 · Altura, Castro Marim · 21.1 km or 10.5 km

September still feels like summer in the Algarve, especially when the race only begins after the temperature starts to fall.

The Flor de Sal Half Marathon starts at 8:00 pm near the Altura Athletics Track. Participants can choose between the half marathon, completed over four laps, and the 10.5 km race, made up of two laps of the same road circuit.

The evening format makes it easy to combine the event with a few days at the beach in Altura, Monte Gordo or elsewhere around Castro Marim. It is also one of the most affordable events on this list, with entries starting from €7.50.

Bimbo Global Race

27 September 2026 · Belém, Lisbon · 10 km or 5 km

Belém is already one of Lisbon’s most recognisable areas. During the Bimbo Global Race, it also becomes a meeting point for runners, families and teams.

The start and finish are located in Praça do Império, with flat and fast routes alongside the River Tagus. The programme includes a 10 km race, a 5 km event, a walk and children’s races.

More than a competitive event, it has a strong community and international feel, as the Bimbo Global Race takes place in cities around the world. In Portugal, the race pack includes a technical T-shirt, a medal and a bag of branded products.

It is a good choice for anyone who wants to race in Lisbon without committing to half-marathon or marathon training.

Ovar City Half Marathon

4 October 2026 · Ovar · 21.1 km or 10 km

The Ovar City Half Marathon reaches its 36th edition as one of the most established events on the Portuguese road-running calendar.

Alongside the 21.1 km race, the programme includes a competitive 10 km, a walk and a free children’s event. The courses are certified, and the race appears on the national road-running calendar, the World Athletics Global Calendar and the Estrelas de Portugal circuit.

It is a strong option for turning the first major race of autumn into a weekend away. The range of events also makes it suitable for groups, even when not everyone wants to run the half marathon.

Leiria Half Marathon

18 October 2026 · Leiria · 21 km or 10 km

Leiria offers a simple combination for a destination race: a compact city, several distances and a programme designed with families in mind.

The Leiria Half Marathon includes 21 km and 10 km races, a 5 km walk and a 500-metre event for children accompanied by their parents. There is also a children’s entertainment area, helping the event go beyond the main competition.

The 21 km and 10 km races use electronic timing, provide finisher medals and have different starting pens based on expected pace.

It is an interesting alternative to larger events, particularly for runners looking for a race weekend with simpler logistics.

Porto Marathon

8 November 2026 · Porto · 42.195 km or 10 km

The Porto Marathon is a separate event from the half marathon held in September. Entries are still available for the marathon, the 10 km race and the 6 km walk.

The race starts near SEA LIFE Porto and finishes at the Queimódromo, beside the City Park. The main course follows the Atlantic coastline and is presented as fast and mostly flat.

For visitors, the experience does not end at the finish line. Race pack collection takes place at Alfândega do Porto, creating a good opportunity to spend a few days in the city before and after the race.

The 10 km and walking events also make it easier to organise a group trip, even when only one person is ready to take on the full 42.195 km.

Gerês Extreme Marathon

27 to 29 November 2026 · Vila do Gerês · From 1 mile to 90 km

Not every road race is designed for speed.

The Gerês Extreme Marathon takes place inside Peneda-Gerês National Park and leads participants along mountain roads with major elevation changes and exposure to late-November weather conditions.

The programme includes a one-mile race, 12 km and 14 km events, a half marathon, a marathon and an extreme 90 km challenge. Despite the natural mountain setting, it is classified as a road-running event, although some sections may use unpaved roads.

It is probably the most demanding race on this list, but also one of the strongest reasons to travel. Here, the scenery and the challenge are inseparable parts of the experience.

Algarve Marathon

6 December 2026 · Vilamoura · 42.195 km, 21.1 km or 10 km

At the beginning of December, while much of Europe is already running in full winter conditions, Vilamoura hosts a marathon starting and finishing beside the marina.

The event offers three competitive distances: marathon, half marathon and 10 km. There is also a 5 km charity walk open to all ages.

This variety makes the Algarve Marathon a good choice for groups with different goals. Everyone can take part in the same event without having to choose the same distance. Finishers in the competitive races receive a medal, while the marathon and half marathon include refreshment stations every 5 km.

It is an appealing way to close the 2026 racing calendar while also enjoying a few quieter days in the Algarve.

When the race bib also chooses the destination

A destination race does not need tens of thousands of participants or a place in the world’s biggest rankings.

It can be a short race beside the beach, an evening half marathon in the Algarve, an urban marathon or a road challenge in the mountains.

What matters is that the race adds something to the trip, and that the trip makes the race more memorable.

Before booking accommodation or transport, check the latest entry availability, course details and event regulations. Places and prices may change as race day approaches.

Explore the next road races on RaceFinder and find an event that is also worth the journey.

Some races make it onto the calendar because of the distance.
