But which competitions held in the country have actually witnessed a Portuguese national record?

The answer is not as simple as producing a ranking.

The public tables maintained by the Portuguese Athletics Federation usually identify the athlete, performance, date and location, but they do not always include the exact commercial name of the race. It is therefore not possible to determine which Portuguese event has produced the largest number of national records without manually matching federation records with historical race results.

Nevertheless, several confirmed cases demonstrate how Portuguese races and cities have contributed to the development of road running in the country.

Lisbon and the women’s half-marathon record

Lisbon holds a central place in Portuguese road-running history.

The current Portuguese women’s half-marathon record belongs to Dulce Félix, who completed the 21.0975-kilometre distance in 1:08:33 in Lisbon on 20 March 2011. The performance remains listed in the official Portuguese Athletics Federation record table.

The capital also continues to host the Portuguese Half Marathon Championships as part of the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon. In March 2026, Samuel Barata and Mariana Machado won the national titles in 1:00:36 and 1:10:10, respectively.

Lisbon’s road-running calendar extends beyond the March event. The city hosts several major races throughout the year, including a half marathon starting on the Vasco da Gama Bridge and finishing at Praça do Comércio.

👉 Ready to experience a half marathon through Lisbon? Discover the Hyundai Lisbon Half Marathon on RaceFinder.

Braga and a former Portuguese 5K record

Braga hosted one of the most significant recent Portuguese performances over 5 kilometres.

In March 2025, Mariana Machado won the Portuguese 5K Championship in 15:22 during a race integrated into the Braga Half Marathon. At the time, the performance was a new Portuguese record, improving the previous mark by more than one minute.

The depth of the field was equally notable, as the first 12 women all finished faster than the national record that had stood before the event.

Machado’s performance is no longer the current record. The federation’s table now lists Patrícia Silva’s 15:20, achieved in Lille in April 2026. The Braga result should therefore be described as a former national record and an important stage in the development of Portuguese women’s 5K running.

The Braga Half Marathon combines the traditional 21.0975-kilometre distance with a competitive 5K, connecting mass participation with high-level domestic racing.

Figueira da Foz and the progression of the Portuguese 10K record

The 2025 Portuguese Road Championships in Figueira da Foz produced another important moment.

Isaac Nader completed the 10 kilometres in 28:01, setting a new Portuguese record at the time. The performance improved the record he had established only a few weeks earlier at the São Silvestre de Lisboa.

That result was later surpassed and is no longer the current national record. Nevertheless, it remains a relevant step in the progression of Portuguese 10K running.

The Portuguese Athletics Federation subsequently confirmed that the record achieved in Figueira da Foz had been improved by José Carlos Pinto.

This is why former records still matter. Each performance establishes a new national standard until another athlete manages to move it forward.

👉 Looking for a race where you can chase your own personal best? Explore upcoming Portuguese road races on RaceFinder.

São Silvestre de Lisboa: where Isaac Nader’s record progression began

Before running 28:01 in Figueira da Foz, Isaac Nader had already established a Portuguese 10K record at the São Silvestre de Lisboa in late December 2024.

The federation confirms that his Figueira da Foz performance improved the record he already held from that race.

The São Silvestre de Lisboa is one of the most recognisable end-of-year events on the Portuguese calendar and will return in December 2026.

👉 Want to finish the year racing through the centre of the capital? Discover the São Silvestre de Lisboa on RaceFinder.

National record, former national record and course record

When discussing historical performances, three different concepts must be separated.

Current national record

The fastest officially recognised performance that has not yet been surpassed by another Portuguese athlete.

Dulce Félix’s 1:08:33 half marathon in Lisbon is one example.

Former national record

A performance that was officially recognised as the national record before eventually being surpassed.

Mariana Machado’s 15:22 in Braga and Isaac Nader’s 28:01 in Figueira da Foz are recent examples.

Course record

The fastest performance ever achieved at one particular event.

A course record may belong to a Portuguese or international athlete and is not necessarily a national record. Confirming it requires checking the event’s official historical results.

Which Portuguese race has produced the most national records?

There is currently no public official ranking that provides a definitive answer.

The federation’s records often identify the city in which the performance was achieved, but not always the exact event. Producing a reliable ranking would require matching every record with historical results, race regulations and information from the organizers.

What can be confirmed is that Lisbon, Braga and Figueira da Foz have all hosted performances that were Portuguese national records at the time they were achieved.

Rather than establishing a definitive ranking, these cases help tell the story of how Portuguese road running has evolved.

Where will the next record be set?

A national record depends on many factors, including the quality of the athletes, the weather, the strength of the field and the technical eligibility of the course.

For most runners, however, the most meaningful objective is not a national record but a new personal best.

Portugal offers events for every level, from local 5K and 10K races to major half marathons and full marathons.

👉 Explore the half-marathon calendar on RaceFinder and find the right course for your next challenge.

👉 Ready for 42.195 kilometres? Discover the EDP Lisbon Marathon on RaceFinder.

Ready for your next challenge?
Explore the RaceFinder calendar, choose your next race and use promotional code
30OFF
on eligible events.

Portugal has a road-running calendar shaped by historic events, fast courses and performances that have helped raise the standard of Portuguese athletics.
