But it is far from the only option.

From swimming and cycling to functional workouts, obstacles and elimination formats, there are plenty of events that challenge your body and mind in completely different ways from a traditional road race.

Here are five experiences to discover before the end of summer.

1. Combine running and functional fitness in a hybrid race

Hybrid races alternate running segments with functional exercises such as rowing, lunges, sled pushes, SkiErg and wall balls.

Rather than relying exclusively on running speed, athletes must balance cardiovascular endurance, strength and recovery.

Event to try: Hybrid Day Estoril 2026

22 August 2026 | Estoril, Cascais

Hybrid Day Estoril takes place at the Estoril Circuit and features eight running segments of approximately one kilometre, alternated with eight functional fitness stations.

The event offers Singles, Doubles and Relay divisions, with both Open and Pro categories available for athletes with different levels of experience.

It is a great option for runners looking for a challenge where strength, pacing and effort management are just as important as speed.

2. Try an aquathlon

An aquathlon combines swimming and running, removing the cycling section found in a triathlon.

With less equipment and simpler logistics, it can be an accessible introduction to multisport racing.

Event to try: II Merelim São Paio Aquathlon

29 August 2026 | Braga

Held near the Cávado River, the II Merelim São Paio Aquathlon welcomes youth athletes, age-group participants and experienced triathletes.

The programme includes regional championships and Open races, creating opportunities for athletes with different levels of experience. The event is held under the technical supervision of the Portuguese Triathlon Federation.

For runners who are already comfortable in the water, an aquathlon can be a natural first step into multisport.

3. Swap the road for an urban MTB circuit

Not every cycling challenge takes place on long roads or remote mountain trails.

An urban circuit introduces corners, changing surfaces and the need to stay focused while completing lap after lap.

Event to try: Maia Urban Race 2026

29 August 2026 | Maia, Porto

Maia Urban Race is a night-time cycling challenge held on a closed circuit of approximately 3.5 kilometres in Maia city centre.

Participants have three hours to complete as many laps as possible, with electronic chip timing used to record and rank the total number of completed laps.

The format turns cycling into a test of both endurance and strategy. Starting fast is not enough. Riders must choose a sustainable pace while managing hydration, nutrition and recovery throughout the event.

4. Discover how far you can go in a Backyard Ultra

In a Backyard Ultra, participants must complete a 6.706-kilometre loop every hour.

Anyone who fails to finish within the hour or is not ready for the next start is eliminated. There is no predetermined finishing distance. The race continues until only one participant remains.

Event to try: Acureto Backyard Ultra 2026

5 September 2026 | Toucinhos, Alburitel

Acureto Backyard Ultra takes place at Parque do Acureto and follows the traditional format of one 6.706-kilometre loop every hour.

The goal is to complete as many consecutive loops as possible while carefully managing pace, nutrition, rest and motivation.

This format is ideal for anyone who wants to test more than speed. Patience, consistency and mental endurance can become just as important as physical fitness.

5. Take on an obstacle race

Obstacle course races combine running with strength, balance, coordination and agility.

Walls, tyres, ramps, mud and suspended structures turn every kilometre into a different physical and mental challenge.

Event to try: VIEIRAFIT Race 2026

12 September 2026 | Vieira do Minho

VIEIRAFIT Race features an urban and natural course of approximately 10 kilometres, with more than 30 obstacles of varying difficulty.

The event includes competitive divisions, categories for OCR Portugal League athletes and a Guerreiros category for participants looking for a more relaxed individual or team experience.

It is a good choice for anyone who wants to break away from a normal running routine and test a wider range of physical abilities.

Choose a different challenge this summer

Trying a new discipline can bring variety to your training, renewed motivation and completely different goals.

Your next challenge may not be about running faster or covering a longer distance. It could be swimming in open water, completing a functional station after a run, staying in a race for several hours or climbing a wall when your legs are already tired.

On RaceFinder, you can discover these and many more running, cycling, swimming, triathlon, aquathlon, OCR and hybrid events across Portugal.

Which challenge would you try first?

Running remains one of the simplest ways to enter the world of endurance sports.
